Automotive-Grade IGBT Shortages Deepen, Foundries Cite Extended Lead Times for Key Substrates
The global supply chain for automotive-grade Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) is facing renewed and deepening shortages. Leading foundries are extending lead times, primarily due to constraints in sourcing specialized silicon substrates and packaging materials.
The automotive sector is bracing for prolonged disruptions in the supply of critical Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs). Key manufacturers, including Infineon, STMicroelectronics, and Onsemi, have communicated to their automotive clients that lead times for numerous IGBT part numbers are now stretching beyond 52 weeks, with some reaching as high as 70 weeks. This extended duration is a significant increase from the 30-40 week averages observed earlier this year, signaling a worsening supply landscape for these power semiconductors crucial for electric vehicle (EV) inverters and charging systems.
The primary bottleneck cited by foundries stems from persistent constraints in the upstream supply chain for specialized silicon substrates, particularly those required for high-voltage and high-current IGBTs. Manufacturers of these substrates are struggling to keep pace with the aggressive demand from the burgeoning EV market, exacerbated by limited capacity expansion for highly technical processing steps. Additionally, a tightened supply of advanced packaging materials and assembly services, specifically those meeting stringent automotive reliability standards, is contributing to the extended lead times.
Procurement managers in the automotive industry are advised to re-evaluate their inventory strategies and secure future allocations actively. The current market conditions suggest that spot market availability will remain extremely limited, and prices are expected to firm further under sustained demand pressure. Long-term agreements and direct engagement with core wafer and substrate suppliers, in addition to vertical integration efforts by some IDMs, may offer some mitigation, but a quick resolution to the current shortage is not anticipated before late 2027.
