STMicroelectronics (STM) is executing a substantial acceleration of its Silicon Carbide (SiC) production capabilities, with a primary focus on scaling up for the automotive sector. This strategic push is a direct response to the escalating demand for SiC power devices driven by electric vehicle (EV) adoption, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and other high-power automotive electronics. The company's expansion plans encompass both front-end wafer fabrication and back-end device packaging, aiming to secure its position as a leading supplier in this critical market segment.
Key to STM's capacity increase is its ongoing investment in fully integrated SiC manufacturing. This includes expanding its 8-inch (200mm) SiC wafer production at its Catania, Italy, facility, which is crucial for achieving cost efficiencies and higher output volumes. Concurrently, new assembly and testing lines dedicated to SiC power modules are being brought online across its global operations.
